Examining the first forty years of John Philip Sousa's life reveals a career that intersects with a wide range of musical traditions. This study contextualizes that career by explaining how Sousa grew from a working-class musician into the celebrity that appeared at the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Sousa first gained the basics of a musical education in Washington's Navy Yard (1854–1874), and then worked as a theater and salon violinist while apprenticing in the United States Marine Band (1868–1875). His first engagements away from Washington (1875–1876) reinforced the importance of providing his audiences with the amusements they desired. While in Philadelphia (1876–1880), Sousa found employment where he could: on the fairgrounds, in theater pits, and with publishing companies. By the time he left the Centennial City, John Philip Sousa was the broadest of professional musicians, having composed, conducted, and performed in and for the theater, opera house, concert hall, and salon.Subjects--Topical Terms:

During his years as leader of the Marine Band (1880–1892), Sousa fought to provide his players with better pay and to increase their numbers. He composed for his ensemble, and also helped to establish its repertoire. Most importantly, Sousa transformed himself from a local celebrity into a national entertainer through recordings and publications. With the guidance of David Blakely, Sousa took the Marine Band on its first tours (1891–1892). As the financial possibilities of a civilian career became clear, Sousa formed a business band (1892–1893), in which he benefited from the death of Patrick Gilmore and the failure of Theodore Thomas at the Columbian Exposition. By 1893 Sousa could claim his place as the most successful musical leader in America.

John Philip Sousa composed some of his most famous marches during the period under consideration, including Semper Fidelis and the Washington Post. But this bandleader, composer, and author's early career also saw the completion of parlor, minstrel, and art songs; parade, concert, and medley marches; schottisches, waltzes, and polkas; and incidental music, operettas, and descriptive pieces. Examining Sousa's output reveals a composer much broader than the bandmaster extraordinaire remembered as the March King.
