The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the effects of background music on quality of sleep in elementary school children. The conceptualization of this study was based on findings from previous studies. Convenience sampling was used to recruit a total of 86 fifth graders from an elementary school in Nankang district of Taipei City in Taiwan. Subjects were randomly assigned to the control group and the experimental group. There were a total of 45 subjects in the experimental group and a total of 41 subjects in the control group. There were no differences between groups on demographic data, caffeine consumption, bedtime routine, anxiety symptoms, and grade reports. Subjects in the experimental group were given a 45-minute CD of music at naptime everyday and bedtime each night for three consecutive weeks. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at pretest and three weekly posttests.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Repeated measures MANOVA was used to examine group differences across time. Results showed that subjects who received background music at naptime everyday and bedtime each night for three consecutive weeks had significant improvement in global sleep quality over time. As for the six components of sleep quality, although improvements were observed in all six components of subjects who received background music, which included perceived sleep quality, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, daytime dysfunction, and sleep latency, statistically significant improvements were only observed in sleep duration and sleep efficiency. Additional findings in subjects' grade report showed that Math and Chinese scores decreased from pretest to posttest in both groups with the exception of Math score in the control group. No significant differences were observed between pre-post test scores between groups. Some of the shortcomings of this study include the use of convenience sample, possibility of a Hawthrone effect, lack of objective measurement, and the use of non subjects' preferred music. Despite the shortcomings, findings have important implications for managing sleep quality in children.
