The days of a performing artist's life are marked with challenges and opportunities for growth that are often unique to that domain. Consequently, it can be difficult for the artist to find the personal and professional supports needed for healthy development. This study examines common issues and themes in the development of adults who are gifted in the performing arts. Several individuals who have been identified as gifted in music, dance, or drama were interviewed and given the opportunity to share their reflections on the nature of their lives as performers. Common themes that emerged from their narratives include the individual's rationale for pursuing activity in the performing arts, the sacrifices inherent in a performing arts career, and the artist's sense of uniqueness of self. Stages and cycles in their lives are explored, as are the various factors that contribute to their talent development and progress toward self-actualization. The present study offers insights into the lives of performing artists and suggests ways in which they may be assisted in their career decisions, personal growth, and integration of their art with their lives.Subjects--Topical Terms:
