Regular physical activity plays a significant role in health throughout the lifecycle. In spite of a wealth of factual knowledge that being physically active is essential for overall health, few Americans engage in regular physical activity. This study assessed the exercise behavior of faculty in South Dakota public universities. The study also determined the physical activity level, classified exercise stage, examined exercise self-efficacy, and identified decisional balance for exercise of faculty in South Dakota public universities.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The target population for the study represented all faculty whose primary responsibility was teaching at the six public universities in the state of South Dakota during the Spring semester of 2003. The sample in the study included 390 faculty members randomly selected from the population. The 54.4% response rate produced 212 faculty responses. Of the 212 sets of questionnaires returned, 173 (44.4%) were used in data analysis. Constructs of the Transtheoretical Model were utilized to carry out the specific purposes of the study. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including chi-square analyses, one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs), and t tests were performed to answer the research questions.

Statistical analyses indicated that 19.1% of faculty are sedentary, 27.7% exercise irregularly (one to two times a week), and 53.2% exercise on a regular basis (three or more times a week). No faculty were in the precontemplation exercise stage, 35 (20.2°%) were in the contemplation stage, 23 (13.3%) were in the preparation stage, 22 (12.7%) were in the action stage, and 82 were (47.4%) in the maintenance stage. The mean of faculty's overall self-efficacy level for exercise was 2.82 on a five-point Likert scale. They reported feeling least confident to exercise when it's inconvenient. Faculty's perceived pros of exercise significantly outweighed their perceived cons of exercise.

Notably greater physical activity level was reported among faculty in action and maintenance than by those in preparation and contemplation. Higher levels of exercise self-efficacy were reported among faculty with greater physical activity level. Faculty's exercise self-efficacy demonstrated a steady and significant increase from preparation through the maintenance stages. These findings are congruent with the model and previous exercise behavior change literature.
