The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the impact of living in the United States on the marital relationships of Taiwanese international students, and to portray the unique and common experiences of Taiwanese student couples living in the United States. Four Taiwanese student couples participated in this study; the wife and husband of each couple were interviewed separately for the first and second interview, and then had a joint interview. Each interview lasted approximately ninety minutes, and was conducted in Mandarin Chinese. Interview data was transcribed and translated verbatim into English and then narrative analysis was conducted.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The impacts of living in the United States on the marital relationships of these couples are identified in two categories: psychosocial impacts and acculturation impacts. The psychosocial impacts are referred to as the psychological effects on the couples due to the change of their social environment. In adjusting to their lives in the United States, these participants developed interaction patterns with their spouses that were different from the dynamics that they would have had in Taiwan. There are several themes that emerged as the psychosocial impacts experienced by the participants. These include (a) change of life-style; (b) sense of emptiness, anxiety, and insecurity; (c) independent marital life from natal families; (d) lacking of resources; and (e) spending more quality time with their spouse. The acculturation impacts are referred to as the relational effects on the couple brought upon by the acculturation of one or both of the spouses. It is noted that when husband and wife are on the same levels of acculturation, the acculturation impact is a positive force on their marriage. When there is a discrepancy between the acculturation level of husband and wife, however, the acculturation impact causes conflicts and decrease the marital satisfaction of a couple. The significance of each identified theme is discussed.
