This study of <italic>Seven Tunes Heard in China for Solo Cello</italic> begins with a biographical description of the composer's childhood, education, the impact of the Cultural Revolution, his Qinhai period, and his musical education and career in the United States. It further provides information concerning the sources of the seven tunes, including an explication of the Chinese traditional modes, the primary folk tunes and songs, lyrics, and related geographic and historical information. There follows an analysis which explores the melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and compositional techniques of the work. The Chinese string instrument, <italic>Er-hu</italic>, and its performance methods are introduced in order to provide information to help performers accommodate the unique Chinese performance style. The Appendix provides a list of Bright Sheng's compositions.
