Salvation, according to Origen, entails a transformation of sight that eventually enables one to see God “face to face.” This transformation involves in part an ascent to contemplation from the world to God, but it is more than a simple ascent because a subtle dialectic develops between seeing the world and seeing God. A consideration of the goodness of the world lifts our eyes to the beatific vision of God, which in turn further illumines the goodness of the world as creation.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Salvation, according to Origen, entails a transformation of sight that eventually enables one to see God “face to face.” This transformation involves in part an ascent to contemplation from the world to God, but it is more than a simple ascent because a subtle dialectic develops between seeing the world and seeing God. This visual transformation presupposes a moral transformation and includes the ability to see God's plan of salvation throughout history. All of the world reveals the good news of salvation offered through Christ, but the ability to appreciate this only begins when one learns to read Scripture properly, for there Christ is most clearly revealed. The full soteriological significance of Christ is particularly evident in the Gospel of John, and for this reason John is the gospel of gospels for Origen. And yet, as Heracleon's heretical reading of John shows, assistance is needed to read John properly. For this reason Origen started his Commentary on John.

In the end all of Scripture reveals Christ, but seeing Christological significance in the Old Testament requires special training. Here again the Gospel of John is particularly helpful, which is why this treatment of the soteriology of Origen's Commentary on John not only provides a fresh introduction to Origen's thought, it also shows the special role that John plays in illumining the meaning of the Old Testament.

By addressing Origen's soteriology in the form of a commentary on a commentary, we also see how Origen not only raises our sights to the spiritual meanings that lie beyond the text of John, but also how our attention is drawn back down into the text itself, so that we begin to appreciate John's extraordinary, but also provisional, value. The Gospel of John is extraordinary because it is the gospel of gospels for Origen, but its significance remains merely provisional because it pales in comparison to the eternal gospel yet to be revealed in the age to come.
