This study is a life history of Howard Thurman (1900–1981), and his career and influence on higher education. African American theologian, mystic, Baptist preacher, educator, mentor, writer, poet, and advocate of bridging racial and religious boundaries; Howard Thurman should be recognized as one of the most influential religious figures in twentieth-century America and as a man who possessed a unique vision and message regarding issues of spirituality and diversity in higher education. Thurman based that vision on: a belief in a common humanity that transcended the contexts of race, class, and gender, the importance of community for individual and collective progress, and the need for spiritual development as a foundation for improving the human condition. He served as spiritual mentor and guide to many Black and White civil rights leaders, and to countless others who felt a deep concern about moral, ethical, and spiritual issues.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study highlighted critical events and time periods in Thurman's life. It especially focused on his years as Dean of Chapel at Howard University (1932–1944), and later at Boston University (1953–1965) where he became the first Black dean at a predominately White institution. Between 1944 and 1953, Thurman helped establish and led, perhaps the first, interracial and interfaith church in America: The Church for The Fellowship of All Peoples (Fellowship Church). In the mid-1960s, Thurman and his wife, Sue Bailey Thurman, founded the Howard Thurman Educational Trust in San Francisco to provide financial assistance to college students. Thurman's career in higher education rested upon a visionary and multi-disciplinary approach to human understanding, respecting and synthesizing the world's major faith traditions, and in developing strategies that reached across societal boundaries to stimulate inner reflection and spiritual development. Howard Thurman should be recognized in higher education as a pioneer in diversity initiatives, and in faith and spirituality issues related to college student development.
