In a post-Christian era it is imperative that ministers of the Gospel find the most effective, efficient ways to help professing Christians strengthen their knowledge of the Kingdom of God and thus their faith and willingness to walk closer with the Lord. The purpose of this study was to address the impact of preaching the parables of Jesus on the faith-development of the Christian Assembly Congregation.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The literature review supported the fact that parables can strongly increase the understanding of the Kingdom of God. In addition the literature discussed how the interpretation of Jesus' parables has undergone dramatic change over the centuries as new information has been obtained. Parables are no longer viewed as allegory, but today are understood as metaphors with extended meaning. Included in this discussion is the idea that while the meaning of the story remains constant, the significance and application of the parable is not fully exhausted by the parable, but influenced by the relevant life experience of the hearer. Having reviewed the purpose, Jewish source, nature, and language of parables this project looked at how contemporary preachers can use Jesus' parables to continue to communicate the message of God's reign.

This theoretical framework was tested using a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative data gathered from a survey collected subsequent to the preaching of four separate sermons on the parables of Jesus. The survey, which included five Likert Scale responses was the instrument used to determine the effect the preaching of the parables had on the recipients as it relates to their knowledge of the Kingdom of God and their insights in how to apply this knowledge in their daily lives. The queries addressed the participants' new insights about (1) the Kingdom of God, and (2) how to apply the lesson in daily Christian life. Query three investigated the helpfulness of the sermon, while the fourth query ascertained the degree to which the sermon challenged the participant. The final query sought to determine if the sermon helped the hearer to feel closer to the teachings of Jesus. The Likert Scale queries were followed with an open ended response that asked the participants to identify how the morning's sermon provided for them in the area of Christian living.

The data from each survey was coded, recorded, and counted. The study concluded that the preaching of the parables of Jesus had a positive effect on the congregation's knowledge of the Kingdom of God, and also that the participants felt their daily walk would be strengthened as a result.
