Conceptual design is an important phase of engineering design that transforms customer requirements into engineering characteristics and determines working mechanisms of the final product. It's a process of idea generation and decision-making. The decisions made in conceptual design have significant impact on the downstream design and manufacturing processes. Developing good design concepts that satisfy the design requirements is a challenging activity due to uncertainties associated with the consequences of designer's decisions and lack of rigorous evaluation methods for comparing alternative design concepts. Therefore, to date, most of the design activities at the conceptual stage of engineering design are experienced based.

In this research, we took a value-based approach to conceptual design and introduced the notion of design values to represent what is important to the designer. The basic idea of our value-based approach is that design value is, and should be, what designer cares about. We have developed a process that enables designers to externalize their implicit design values and express them in the form of design objectives. Furthermore, we have introduced two distinct spaces, i.e., value space and design space. Designers develop their design objectives and identify the relationships among those objectives in the value space in the form of objective structures and use those objectives to guide the process of concept generation in the design space. Moreover, design objectives are used to evaluate the design alternatives in the design space. We have introduced five categories for design objectives and three methods for decomposition of design objectives. Designer use these categories into more detailed objectives. The detailed design objectives provide a better understanding of what is important for the designer and guide the process of alternative generation by reminding the designer to search for alternative along specific directions. The developed framework has been tested with several conceptual design problems. The results show that by following this approach, designers are more focused on what they want and what is the best way to achieve it, which improves the quality and efficiency of conceptual design process.
