Conceptual design is a process of generating functions and creating behaviors and forms to fulfill the functional requirements. Designers must generate many ideas during this early stage of design so that more alternatives can be explored and more design concepts become available to choose from at the later stages of design. Although design methods and computer tools have been developed to support various design activities, helping designers to generate ideas remains a major challenge to the design research community.

There are several approaches to address this challenge. Developing training courses can teach designers to follow systematic design methods; one can also devise design techniques to stimulate creativity; and software tools can help designers to record their ideas. However, in order to develop courses, techniques, and software tools, one first, needs to understand the creative design process through which ideas are generated. If creative thinking patterns in design can be identified, then more effective design methods can be developed that can help designers not only carrying out routine design tasks but also generating new ideas.

This dissertation proposes a Cognitive Approach to Creative Conceptual Design. A Cognitive Model of Creative Conceptual design is developed to capture interactions between cognitive processes and engineering design activities. The model identifies how creative properties of various types of information stimulate cognitive processes to produce design operations and generate design entities. A protocol analysis method is developed to evaluate the model and identify patterns in creative design behavior. Protocol from four design sessions revealed that meaningfulness, relevance, and emergence stimulated creativity more than other creative properties. These creative properties were then instilled into the design problem of a cognitive experiment (with ten mechanical engineering students) to study creative stimulation. The experiment revealed that the patterns of creative design behavior (identified by protocol analysis) stimulated creation of many new ideas. Through cognitive modeling, protocol analysis, and cognitive experiments, this research showed that designers exhibit patterns of creative design behavior, and that these patterns can be captured and instilled into the design process, to promote creativity.
