This study and social action project investigated the requirements to provide adolescent males and females with a nurturing, structured, and supportive living environment through the development and implementation of a therapeutic group home. This facility in Broward County Florida will enable residents to learn and utilize appropriate social, educational, coping, and behavioral skills, in a group-home setting. The social-action methodology included: a review of representative programs in the local and regional area, the assessment of referral needs of potential adolescent clients in Broward County, the fulfillment of Florida State legal requirements, the creation of a wide range of policies, procedures, handbooks, the identification of an appropriate Board of Directors, the creation of a projected annual budget, and the clarification of treatment modalities and structure. This resulted in a comprehensive paper documenting the requirements and the development stages of The New Pathway Institute (NPWI) in Miramar, Florida. NPWI will open after the necessary funding is achieved. The program is designed for 6–8 clients (ages 12 y/o to 18 y/o) demonstrating a need for intensive psychosocial intervention due to emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders within a 24-hour, non-secure living facility. Referrals will primarily come from the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Department of Children and Family Services. The program mission is to stimulate and to develop the individual's highest potential to function in a community setting. The objective is to motivate and train the individual in the least restrictive environment. The treatment modalities are behaviorally based and designed to emphasize adaptive and self monitoring behavior and gradually increasing criteria for advancement and the fading of structure (e.g. prompts, supervision and security). The holistic curriculum is designed to promote cooperative learning, readiness skills, and appropriate social skills. Effectiveness planning includes outcome and performance-based objectives. As a contribution to the discipline of behavioral psychology, this social action project may serve as an example of the successful early development of a therapeutic group home through the complex maze of legal requirements, as well as the ethical, social, and psychological issues involved.
