Lyndon Baines Johnson was a seminal figure in twentieth century American history. Immersed in American politics from his birth in Texas in 1908 to his death in 1971, his public record provides a valuable documentary of conservation and resource development in the twentieth century. His concern for land and water in particular set the stage for the emerging environmental movement of the 1960s. Tracing Johnson's life-long immersion in conservation and resource development can help us reconstruct the series of transitions leading to contemporary environmentalism. The conservation movements of the twentieth century provided Johnson with a rigorous training in conservation and resource development. His childhood in Central Texas, his rise through the halls of Congress into the White House, and the conservation programs and projects he supported provide vital links for a study of the transition to the environmental movement of the sixties and seventies.Subjects--Topical Terms:
