Mating systems, which determine the genetic variation and evolutionary potential of plant populations, are subject to influence from numerous environmental factors. In this study, I show that Cornus florida trees on north and south aspects in the Missouri Ozarks, USA, differ significantly in floral density, tree size, the number of inflorescences per tree, and fruit survival throughout the growing season, all factors with the potential to influence mating patterns. I use allozymes as genetic markers to examine the mating system of C. florida to determine whether environmental context influences multilocus outcrossing rates (tm ), levels of biparental inbreeding (tm– ts), and the number of effective pollen donors ( Nep).

Results showed that C. florida is predominantly outcrossed on both slope aspects (tm = 1.00 on each slope), but that significant levels of biparental inbreeding occur (t m–ts = 0.027 and 0.045 for south and north aspects, respectively). Maternal F values were high relative to several other tree species (F = 0.159 and 0.274 for south and north aspects, respectively), yet consistent with those found in other Ozark tree species. No differences were observed between aspects for any of the mating system parameters estimated, however, many trends in the results suggest that this may be due to a Type II error rather than to lack of true differences. High density populations on north-facing slopes tended to have higher levels of maternal and biparental inbreeding, a higher number of effective pollen donors, and higher levels of fruit abortion throughout the season, all of which support the hypothesis that the mating system is influenced by differences in density.
