This study attempts to investigate the role of religion in the daily life of Muslim Sudanese, paying special attention to the role played by singing in the religious and ritual life of the people. The study explores the role of mystic Islam in recognizing the importance of singing in the life of the Sudanese, and the ways in which Śufism has exploited that importance to its benefit. The study focuses on the role played by Śufism in the spread of religion, paying special attention to the Śufi practice of <italic> zikr</italic>, in which chanting is an integral part of the ritual.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study intends to examine the complex relationship between zãr and zikr, which reflects the underlying tension between men and women in an Islamic society. While men, to the exclusion of women, dominate zikr, zãr, on the other hand, is a female domain.

The Introductory chapter outlines the scope of the study and the theoretical considerations upon which the research is grounded. The chapter also discusses issues that surround the problems of representing rituals, especially those that involve singing and chanting. The introduction also highlights the problematic question of gender in Islam and Islamic societies. Chapters two and three explore the history of Islam, its spread and its role, the history of Śufism and Śufi orders, and the development of the various Sudanese Śufi fraternities.
