Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 2003.
This thesis examines a selection of nineteenth-century transcriptions of traditional Breton songs, focusing particularly on the gwerzioù as an oral tradition associated primarily with women singers and examining some of the ways in which the interests and concerns of women may be reflected in the content of the songs they sing. In order to offer a broader context for a consideration of the specific characteristics of the gwerzioù—a song genre often equated with ballads—this thesis also offers an overview of the sonioù, a Breton song genre generally equated with lyric song. The discussion reviews some of the ways in which the themes, concerns, and imagery of the son and gwerz narratives both differ and overlap, and considers the extent to which these song traditions may be related to their social context, especially as they may reflect some of the values, tensions, and conflicts of quotidian life in pre-twentieth-century, rural Breton communities. Although relying primarily on François-Marie Luzel's nineteenth-century collections of gwerzioù and sonioù , this thesis also draws upon the research of Donatien Laurent, particularly concerning his twentieth-century collection of Loeiz ar Ravallec gwerz narratives. Primary matters of consideration include the qualification of gwerz narratives by traditional Breton singers and audiences as representing expressions of “truth,” the genre's consistent articulation of profound acts of transgression, and an examination of the gwerzioù as a possible forum for addressing and redressing such transgressions with a possible concomitant goal of enacting popular justice.Subjects--Topical Terms:
