Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fairleigh Dickinson University, 2003.
There is an enormous body of research on the Rorschach and MMPI, but only a small percentage of it has investigated the relationship between these two tests. An even smaller number of studies have looked at this issue in a sample of adolescents using the MMPI-A, and even fewer have specifically examined these two tests as they relate to psychosis. Accurate detection of psychosis is important in adolescents because it is difficult to assess based on interview alone, is important to differentiate from other clinical disorders, and is critical to appropriate psychopharmacological and psychological treatments. Both the MMPI-A and the Rorschach have been found to be valid indicators of psychosis. Research on the combined use of these tests may be helpful in enhancing the precision and accuracy of the detection of psychosis in adolescents, which could in turn improve treatment outcome.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Previous research investigating interrelationships among conceptually related MMPI and Rorschach variables has generally yielded weak or non-significant findings. However, the literature does not allow one to reach strong conclusions because of the methodological problems with many of these studies. The present study examined relationship among conceptually similar MMPI-A and Rorschach psychosis-relevant findings correcting for these shortcomings and using multiple regression analyses, rather than correlational ones.

As predicted, the MMPI-A and Rorschach showed an appropriately limited degree of convergent validity. Construct validity was determined for both tests, with the MMPI-A outperforming the Rorschach on self-report measures, therapist ratings of paranoia, and medical chart indicators of overt psychotic symptoms. The Rorschach displayed stronger, but not significantly greater, associations than the MMPI-A with therapist ratings of disturbed thinking and chart indicators of tangential thought processes. Both tests were equally related to a patient being discharged from the hospital on neuroleptic medication or with a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder.

These findings suggest that future research should use multiple regression approaches when the dependent variable is multidimensional in nature, as are many MMPI-A scales. The implications of these findings for clinical practice are discussed.
