The <underline>Making of a Legend: Louis Ginzberg's </underline><underline> Legends of the Jews</underline> is an intellectual, literary, and cultural study of one of the foundational anthologies of American Jewry. This dissertation examines a modern chapter in the perennial story on the centrality of midrash to the formation of Jewish identity. In contrast to past midrashic anthologies, Ginzberg employs the category of folklore to forge a religious national conception of Jewish culture. His use of the folk is understood against the backdrop of alternative cultural arguments for the emergence of Jewish national identity. The Narrative and the Notes of the Legends perform multifaceted cultural work, strategically shaping the meaning of Jewishness through narrativizing, transforming, and collecting the sources of Jewish tradition. This dissertation situates Ginzberg's pedagogic project of cultural hermeneutics within the context of the late nineteenth century, early twentieth century emergence of Jewish national culture; the American Jewish revival at the turn of the century; the discourses on race and culture in America and Europe; and within the institutional framework and two-tiered intellectual tradition of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. <underline>The Making of a Legend</underline> also situates Ginzberg's work within the context of his scholarship, his intellectual and cultural influences and precursors, and his family traditions.
