This dissertation provides an anthropological analysis of the European Monetary Union that hopes to complement the many studies of the EMU from within political science and economics. It does so by attaching arguments about currency regulation to arguments about the regulation of social and moral space, as represented by the attempt to build a new transnational city referred to as the “Öresund Region.” This is a new project (though it has a utopian history that dates back at least a century) which aims to meld the separate cities of Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden into one grand metropolis. Opponents and proponents of the Region, it turns out, have particular opinions about currency regulation that map onto their political beliefs about the planned Region.

520 $a Thus, in Öresund today, different groups are arguing over different ways to produce a better world, and the groups I studied here have specifically hinged their hopes on a more rational money system. The dissertation traces this by studying specific historical reforms and current practices related to the circulation of currency. Thus, the ethnographic chapters discuss each currency regime's rules relating to the movement of goods, the control of mobile populations, and the beliefs and regulations relating to bankruptcy and wealth; each chapter does so by playing upon the contrasts and comparisons of currency control and usage across borders, especially the border separating Denmark from Sweden. In so doing, the dissertation as a whole hopes to illuminate the intriguing modernist project to establish, once and for all, a “sound” money—a money whose value is reliable on a day-to-day basis, and whose structure and control results from the envisioned progress of the scientific study of money (economics). Finally, I relate this concern with sound money to the drive toward building national communities, the national communities that are potentially threatened today by such projects as those represented by the new alternative currencies and the Öresund Region.
