Thesis (M.A.)--University of Louisville, 2002.
This thesis examines the effect of self-esteem success vs. failure feedback and cognitive load on respondents' attitudes toward both cosmetic surgery an tattooing. In study one, respondents were administered the Rosenberg Self-esteem Inventory. At a later time they engaged in a social problem-solving task on which they received predetermined feedback (either success or failure) and then filled out a questionnaire regarding their attitudes toward both cosmetic surgery and tattooing. It was hypothesized that individuals with low self-esteem would express more positive attitudes toward cosmetic surgery than individuals with high self-esteem. It was also expected that individuals with high self-esteem would express more positive attitudes toward tattooing than individuals with low self-esteem. Success feedback was expected to have a similar effect on such attitudes to high self-esteem, whereas low self-esteem was expected to have a similar effect to low self-esteem. It was also expected that there would be a significant interaction of self-esteem with feedback as well as an interaction between these two variables and cognitive load. The only effect that surfaced in study one was that low self-esteem was associated with favorable attitudes toward cosmetic surgery. However, when only the data produced by individuals who were able to reproduce the cognitive load manipulation was examined, the other hypotheses came closer to receiving support.

In study two I sought to replicate the results of study one using only data from individuals able to reproduce the cognitive load manipulation. In study two, the hypothesis that low self-esteem was more strongly associated with favorable attitudes toward cosmetic surgery received support, but just as in study one, no other hypothesis received report. The results of both studies are discussed in the context of self-enhancement and self-protection.
