520 $a An important source of innovation is user information. This study investigates user-centered design goal setting, the process of gathering, interpreting and applying user information to define the scope, nature and direction of a search for design solution.
520 $a The investigation involves forty-seven user-centered case studies collected from twenty-three leading design consulting firms in the United States through in-depth interview. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, analyzed, scored and compared on non-continuous and semantic scales. The results reveal four major patterns of goal setting according to decision hierarchy, aspect of goal and goal generating approach. The four patterns of goal setting are correlated with innovation situations that combine variations on technology and market. Distinct patterns of user research underpin goal setting in each innovation situation. These can be identified according to investigation models and research characteristics.
520 $a Based on actual design activity by substantial consultancies, this study brings to our attention through analysis a contribution that might otherwise remain hidden in individual practice or anecdotal report. The findings of this study are beneficial on many levels from design practice, to business competency, to organizational development, to social innovation diffusion. According to the findings, user-centered design goal setting guidelines are developed for different innovation situations. It proposes a new approach to user-research planning in relation to design goal setting. It also describes an alternative mental model of user-centered design in relation to innovation.
