This research looks at both the military, computer-based simulation and training technology arenas to formulate a taxonomy of simulation-based didactic features and an evaluation framework for assessing team-oriented simulation-based training systems. In particular the research looks at two questions: (1) What are the automated didactic features for team-oriented military (command and staff), computer-based, simulation training systems to support the briefing/pre-exercise, exercise execution, and post-exercise/debriefing training phases? It is my hypothesis that answering these research questions is a prerequisite to streamlined computer-based simulation training systems where people, process, and technology efficiently support the training mission. The ultimate hypothesis is that an integrated set of didactic features applied appropriately to the various types of simulation infrastructures will enable improved training transfer, reduced training time, reduced training expense, and reduced manpower costs in terms of instructors, evaluators, and system administrators.
