Thesis (Psy.D.)--Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, 2003.
Violent offenders continue to be a concern in the United States for a variety of reasons, including the tremendous monetary costs they create. The objective of this project is to design a study to investigate the executive functioning of institutionalized violent juvenile offenders. The goals of the proposed study are to explore means by which to assess juveniles' executive functioning and thereby better tailor treatment for violent offenders, as well as to increase the general knowledge base concerning this population. The design of the study was derived from a literature review on theories of aggression and contemporary understandings of brain functioning, as well as studies concerning physiology, psychopathy, aggression, and mediating social and environmental factors; research on the evaluative materials and methods currently available was also considered. The completed proposed study was then presented to an area clinical coordinator of the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services for review and commentary. Finally, suggestions for modifications to the current study and directions for further research were discussed.
