GIS analysis was conducted to reveal changes in land use patterns, and the impacts of these changes upon forest vegetation. The results indicated that land use patterns were determined more by the capability of the land in the 1880s than in the 1990s. Forest vegetation decreased in area. However, the quality indicated that natural succession was in progress.

Land use patterns in effect in pre-modern days can be put forward as an effective model for sustainable development. However, the vegetation transformation that has occurred raises questions about whether secondary woodlands are better conserved as they were, or if it is better that they grow back to their potential.
