Thesis (M.A.)--Texas A&M University - Commerce, 2003.
The role of the commander's wife emerged in the closely-knit military society of the post Civil War army in which the officer corps never exceeded 2000 at any one time. The officer's family was categorized as “camp followers.” Gender roles, of necessity, often overlapped and challenged army wives to revise their domestic ideals to include the entire garrison within their realm of concern and influence. How Alice Kirk Grierson in a regiment of black soldiers and Elizabeth Bacon Custer in a regiment of white soldiers self-defined their roles to promote their husbands' careers while managing their private lives is recorded in Alice's correspondence and Elizabeth's published works. Their lives mark them as forerunners of the role of the commander's wife, which was deemed essential to the recruitment and retention of the professional officer by the modern army, earning army wives official recognition during World War II as “dependents.”Subjects--Topical Terms:
