This thesis analyzes newspaper articles from the <italic>Daily Star Journal </italic>, in Warrensburg, Missouri, to look at the language that the newspaper uses in regards to a female politician. The present discussion centers on the following two research questions: (1) Does sexism still exist in the media? and (2) Does the language that is used in the media promote sexist beliefs about women, particularly women politicians?Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a I conducted a textual analysis of articles from 1993–2002, which were obtained from Representative Deleta Williams. I replicated part of a study done by Hawes and Thomas in 1995. Feminist theory is used as the theoretical basis for this research. I then explain and interpret research dealing with sexist language, the media and women, some of the research being specifically about politics and women.
520 $a These articles contained some forms of sexist language. However, the newspapers were not the only guilty parties using sexist language; Williams and some of her colleagues were as well.
