Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2003.
This dissertation examines the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) from the perspective of the early reign of the German princess Amalia Elisabeth of Hesse-Cassel, a key but consistently overlooked figure in both the war's continuation and in its final resolution at the Peace of Westphalia. Amalia Elisabeth was both ordinary, as the leader of one of hundreds of states drawn into the bloody, Europe-wide conflict, and extraordinary, as a strong, independent, female ruler whose individual actions and goals changed the outcome of the war. This study (which is based almost entirely on extensive original archival research) has provided important new information on the complex mechanisms driving this war, proving the continued significance of religion, local concerns, and family relationships, and demonstrating the key role of the smaller states in shaping the early modern period. Furthermore, this research into this amazing woman's motivations, as well as her relationships with other princes, has provided a valuable basis for studying larger questions of the interaction of religion and politics, and the role of these interactions in driving international conflict.Subjects--Topical Terms:
