After examining the alternative media in Taiwan since 1970s, it is important to ensure the significant role of alternative media in Taiwan's political transition and democratization. During the period of martial law—1949 to 1987—most alternative media—the opposition political magazines, embraced the norms of their profession and the idea that they had a duty to serve as a check on government activities. In 1990s, technologies such as VCR, satellite and cable television constituted an effective force that made the state's media system more open to the world and freer from the monopoly of the party-state. After the 2000 presidential election, the alternative media had reached their goal after the former opposition party got the ruling power, and then the leading issue of political opposition media in 1990s had turned into social movement ones. Due to the transition of alternative media technology and the coming of the Internet age, various virtual communities replace the traditional media form, and become the leading alternative media since 2000. Even they provoke their alternative voice and transform into the power of political mobilization in Taiwan's political participation
