was found to be a strong covariate with heart rate and blood pressure increase during cold exposure. Spectral decomposition of the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) peak for each subject was sensitive enough to identify changes in autonomic tone between the rest and cold conditions, but failed to identify any significant differences between the female and male subjects. Females did, however, tend to increase RSA peak more than males when exposed to the cool water immersion. This study demonstrated that autonomic responses to local cold exposure is different for females and males and additional studies are needed to further elucidate these differences.
