Understory plant species composition and production can be influenced by disturbances such as wildfires and timber harvest. Subsequent changes in these attributes may depend upon the type and severity of the disturbance, as well as time since the disturbance. The objectives of this study were to examine changes in: (1) understory plant species composition and production and (2) overstory attributes since the 1972 Rattle Burn wildfire on the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona. During July and August of 2002 and 2003, tree density, basal area and understory production were sampled on 30 plots on each of the four sites: high severity burn, low severity burn, an area not burned by the wildfire, but prescribed burned in 1977, and an unburned area. Changes in understory production and composition among sample years, (1972, 1974, 1980, 2002 and 2003) were explored using cluster analysis and ordination. Tree density and basal area changed throughout the course of the study due to tree mortality, salvage cutting, logging, and planting. Understory composition and production were affected by these changes. Other factors that influenced understory production were precipitation, lack of fire, grazing pressures, and succession. In the early sampling periods of 1972, 1974, and 1980, the major influence upon the understory was the wildfire. When the early sampling periods were compared with the 2002 and 2003 data using cluster analysis and ordination, the short-term effects of the wildfire were minimized by the combined long-term changes in overstory attributes, grazing, and drought.
