In a manipulative experiment, I examined the effects of landscape composition and structure on northern bobwhite winter and nest survival at Ames Plantation, Tennessee. A reduction of approximately 50% in closed canopy forests on 2 treatment areas increased winter survival 25% (32% to 41%). For every I m/ha increase in closed canopy woods edge density the risk of mortality increased by 0.3% for individuals in a covey. Nest survival differed by female-incubated first nests, male-incubated nests, and female-incubated re-nests with nest survival ranging from 47% to 61%. Incubated nests on the treatment areas had similar to nests incubated on the control areas. Nest survival increased as patch shape became more complex. As the percentage of land surrounding a nest became more fields, nest survival increased. This was true at 3 different spatial scales; 50 m, 200 m, and 400 m radii out from the nest. This study demonstrates population processes may work at larger spatial scales influencing the design and implementation of conservation programs.
