Methods. A randomized study was performed to assess patients' ability to learn pertinent orthodontic information from a Web site. 64 patients were randomly assigned to either the control or experimental groups. Both groups received a pretest consisting of 15 questions. At a subsequent orthodontic appointment, the control group received a verbal consultation. The experimental group interacted with the Web site at this subsequent visit. The control group received the post-test immediately after their consultation. The experimental group received their post-test immediately after viewing the Web site. Results. Both groups showed statistically significant increases in total scores when comparing pre-test to the post-test. The experimental group had a greater mean change in score compared to the control group. Conclusions. A carefully designed Web site can be used as an adjunct to increase a patient's level of pertinent orthodontic knowledge.
