The researcher chose to undertake this study because a growing number of health care organizations believe PDAs hold great potential. Information technology companies are developing new ways for physicians to use PDAs to access, enter, and transfer health care data (Strayer, Reynolds, and Ebell, 2004).

Emergency Medicine Resident attitudes toward the use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) were solicited along with whether or not they expressed interest in general applications and medical applications. Thirty-five Emergency Medicine residents participated. They were from two institutions: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital) and Provident Hospital, both located in Chicago, Illinois.

In this study, Q Methodology was employed to examine and categorize their opinions and thoughts. The data analysis revealed two primary patterns of beliefs. Sixteen participants use a PDA to retrieve general and medical information and feel PDAs have a significant role to play in the future of healthcare. Twelve participants did not find enough clinical value to warrant use of a PDA in a clinical setting. All participants have experience with technology but might not use a PDA in clinical practice but feel that physicians can easily learn to use a PDA.
