While the importance of the role that Carlo Emilio Gadda (1893--1973) played in Modern Italian Literature is widely recognized, the discussion on his political ideas is still controversial. The writer has in fact taken completely different positions towards Fascism, moving from the adherence of his youth to the complete refusal expressed in his later years.

520 $a My dissertation consists of an analysis of some aspects of the writer's biography, compared to his fiction and essay writings, that explain this controversial relationship.
520 $a In the first chapter I focus on important details of Gadda's biography (beginning with the death of his father and of his brother through the controversial relationship with his mother), which contributed to form the writer's peculiar personality. In this chapter, I demonstrate how a recurring Oedipus structure can be recognized in the writer's life, in which the superego role is played---in turns---by both the parents, and lastly by fascism.
520 $a In the second chapter I provide an overview of Gadda's political position, focusing on his radically changing ideas about fascism and its leader, Benito Mussolini. I also consider passages from writings and personal letters, in which the author describes his position toward authority.
520 $a In the third chapter I provide a reading of the novel That Awful Mess on Merulana Street, with which I demonstrate how this work contains several autobiographic references that clearly show the parallelism between Gadda's complex affective situation and his political issues. In this chapter I refer to the work of scholars like Elio Gioanola and Maurizio de Benedictis, who have proposed psychoanalytical interpretations of Gadda's works, but without connecting the familiar and the political spheres.
520 $a Finally, in the last chapter I expand the concepts formulated in the preceding one, using Eros e Priapo as a subtext of the novel mentioned before: I show how, despite the apparently exclusive political content, the ideas Gadda expressed in this work still refer to his pre-existent affective-familiar background.
