Thesis (Ph.D.)--Idaho State University, 2004.
This study explored the perceptions and experience of counselor trainees regarding career counseling. Data from interviews with participants and key informants were described in a grounded theory of counselor trainees' developmental process as related to enrollment in an introductory career counseling course. Practical experience, combined with didactic instruction, and support enables trainees to develop career counseling competency. Misconceptions exist among counselor trainees regarding the interconnections between career and personal counseling. Trainees engage in the career counseling course as a result of perceived relevancy and effective pedagogy. Values conveyed by training programs and faculty regarding career counseling influence attitudes of trainees regarding career counseling. Limitations and future research were discussed. Implications for the profession and counselor educators were presented as related to the findings.
