The goal of this study is to demonstrate that the role of alchemy in L'OEuvre au Noir goes well beyond providing a historical background for the life and times of its protagonist, as most critics would have it. Although some of them have recognized alchemy's importance in the novel, their approach has been mostly thematic and always from an angle restricted to one aspect of the novel, such as the psychological or social dimension of the alchemical quest and the synthetic figures of style found throughout L'OEuvre au Noir.

The focus is on its literary characteristics linked to alchemy, not its occult ones. Marguerite Yourcenar establishes an analogy between alchemy and literature from the start and develops it throughout the novel, as it is pervasive in all textual levels, be they related to form or content. The double meaning of the original French title, by referring to both "arts" simultaneously, introduces this correspondence from the beginning as the organizing metaphor of the entire novel. Moreover, alchemy symbolizes literature in the other formal elements of L'OEuvre au Noir, such as its metatext, intertext, structure, language, symbols, style, genre, and organization of characters, as well as it does in its main themes. In turn, the combination of all those elements results in a work also akin to alchemy, both in its process and in its anticipated results. The creative process is an equally lonely, repetitive, and transforming one for the alchemist and for the author, in her quest to turn the everyday, base matter of words into literary gold. In addition, as it is the case for the alchemist's elixir of life, the gold she creates will become the main ingredient of her own formula for eternal life. Indeed, Marguerite Yourcenar literally becomes an "Immortal 1" in 1981, as the first woman to ever be inducted into the French Academy2.

This said, the redundant metaphor relating literature to alchemy throughout L'OEuvre au Noir is not an explicit one, discernable at first glance, hence the notion of esoteric poetics we use to characterize it.

1According to the French dictionary Robert , "immortel," is also used, mainly in the plural, in relation to academicians (872), i.e. members of the French Academy. 2"L'Academie francaise," as we find out in the Robert des noms propres, is the oldest of the five academies forming the "Institut de France." The cardinal of Richelieu founded the French Academy in 1634 and King Louis the XIIIth made it official in 1635. Dissolved in 1793, Napoleon Bonaparte reinstated it in 1803. The task of its 40 members, is to compose and update the official French dictionary, Dictionnaire de la langue francaise, as well as to disburse literary and other prizes (8). Its members, all published French writers, are elected for life by the academicians themselves, when a vacancy arises.
