Traditional and contemporary accounts, descriptions and definitions of realism in nineteenth-century German literature, representing a variety of approaches in scholarship, are synopsized in Chapter One. The methodological and epistemological assumptions on which these are based are discussed with special emphasis on the problem of realism and aesthetic autonomy. It is suggested that hermeneutical theory provides a new conceptual foundation for an understanding of the "poetic" and "realistic" aspects of poetic realism in literary history.

Chapter Two outlines an approach to poetic realism based on the hermeneutical theory of Wilhelm Dilthey. The model of the hermeneutical circle, in particular, is found to suggest a view of literary realism as consisting in illustrations of the role played by a socio-cultural realm in the interpretive experience of the individual. In contrast to conceptions of literary realism based on a dualistic or linear model of perceptual experience, where realism is implied to consist in the effort to depict "objectively" or establish correspondences to a world independent of and external to the work, the hermeneutical model allows the work of poetic realism to be comprehended as illustrating, creating, and participating in the production of coherent "wholes" of meaning. The former or dualistic approach is found to generate criteria for literary realism which precipitate a myriad of theoretical and methodological difficulties in the understanding of poetic realism, while the latter or hermeneutical approach theoretically complements an appreciation of the "poetic" aspects of this literature. The implications of such a hermeneutical view of poetic realism for a reader-oriented approach in literary history are sketched briefly at the end of this chapter.

Chapter Three presents discussions of Adalbert Stifter's Bergkristall, Gottfried Keller's Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe and Theodor Storm's Der Schimmelreiter to illustrate how the variety of poetic devices and structures used in this literature may be viewed as congruous with realism conceived on a hermeneutical model.
