This project preserved and created access to 1,610 black-and-white negatives taken by Charley (Clayton) Howe (1897--1989), a serious amateur photographer and avid avocational archaeologist. Howe belonged to the Archaeological Survey Association of Southern California, Inc. ("ASA"), founded in 1947 to survey southern California in anticipation of destruction of archaeological sites by urbanization or vandalism. The negatives document Howe's travels and ASA's work during 155 trips to 84 locations in California and Mexico between 1947 and 1972. The collection includes photographs of petrographs and pictographs as well as many archaeological sites and rock art that no longer exist. The negatives, which contain comprehensive and some unique documentation for archaeologists and historians, are arranged by subject in 96 series and chronological sub-series. They are described in a finding aid format that allows easy access to the image content and the application of encoded archival description (EAD) for web dissemination.
