Thesis (M.A.)--University of Massachusetts Boston, 1997.
This thesis studies the evolution of arrangement and description. First the thesis reviews pertinent archival literature. This review is followed by four case studies to determine whether the individual archives are representative of larger developments in the profession as a whole. The four Massachusetts archival repositories include two public archives and two private manuscript repositories. The thesis compares practice within and between repositories as well as with literature and presents possible conclusions based on findings.

Arrangement and description are the processes by which archivists organize, catalog and make the collections in their custody available to researchers. The archival tasks are critical because they make possible the use of archival records. The theory of archival arrangement and description has changed considerably over the last two hundred years, evolving from a variety of institution-specific cataloging systems to a uniform reliance on "provenance." This standard for arrangement, provenance, means that records produced by a given creator must not be mixed with those of any other records creators. The closely related principle of original order requires that records are maintained in the order established by their creator. While the principle of provenance is almost universally accepted today, this seemingly obvious method of organizing records has not been the only system used; a number of other cataloging systems preceded it. This thesis identifies some of those earlier systems, analyzes how they were developed, evaluates their usefulness in providing access to archival information, and explains why they were abandoned.
