Thesis (Ph.D.)--Georgia State University, 1998.
The aim of this dissertation is to construct an argument, using materials from Dewey's logic of inquiry, that demonstrates one way in which experience and education may be said to stand in necessary connection. Given the necessity of the relation between education and experience, Dewey's theory of education can be tested against competing theories and shown to be more adequate to the idea of education than any of its competitors. Its competitors fail in one way or another to honor the necessity of the link between education and experience. Finally, it will be shown that Dewey's theory of education does not offer an unimplementable ideal. Practices developed in Dewey's famous Laboratory School illustrate the usefulness of Dewey's theory of education. Inquiry was the engine that ran Dewey's school; and reconstruction of Lab School practice in terms of inquiry reveals the relation between a school's organizational structure and the ability of that school to support inquiry, that is, education, itself.
