In this thesis, I examine values in children's poetry. Beginning by showing that poetry is rhetorical, I posit that the values in children's poetry deserve analysis. To study these values, I employ Walter Fisher's narrative paradigm, specifically his concept of narrative fidelity. By applying Fisher's questions concerning the logic of good reasons to children' s poetry, I determine whether or not the poetry has narrative fidelity. The poetry under analysis comes from a sixth grade reader currently used in a public school system and a sixth grade reader currently used in a Christian school in southeastern Virginia. In analyzing the poetry through a Fisherian lens, I find that the poems possess a high amount of narrative fidelity, but there is some room for improvement. This thesis concludes with an assessment of Fisher's narrative paradigm as a tool for studying values.
