Underwater vehicle designers are beginning to recognize the advantages of oscillating foil propulsion systems. Many builders have experimented on flapping foil mechanisms, but the advantages of adding springs to imitate the function of ligaments in fish have not been explored by many. Fish seem to take advantage of the elastic property of ligaments to reduce their energy costs.

This thesis summarizes the project of building a swimming robot for verifying a mathematically predicted improvement in propulsive efficiency. A test robot was built to verify power savings by adding springs in the mechanism. Control circuits were designed and programs written. Swim tests were carried out with and without springs.

The scope of this project was limited to straight-line swimming and the focus was on quantifying the power savings. Accuracy of test data was verified by comparing results from various repetitive trials.*
