We provide the essential statistical considerations required to conduct telephone surveys. First we present an overview of telephone surveys. In addition, we discuss coverage of the U.S. population using telephone surveys, use of new technology to conduct telephone surveys, and challenges to the future of telephone surveys.

520 $a We illustrate five survey sampling procedures including directory sampling, unrestricted random digit dialing (RDD), the Mitofsky-Waksberg method, disproportionate stratified sampling (DSS), and list-assisted sampling.
520 $a We show the formulas for estimating population means and variances using data collected in a simple RDD design and the Mitofsky-Waksberg method. We provide SAS code for generating RDD sample and a method for estimating the mean number of expected calls based on the negative hypergeometric distribution. In addition, we present SUDAAN code for analyzing a complex survey in a public health setting.
