We illustrate five survey sampling procedures including directory sampling, unrestricted random digit dialing (RDD), the Mitofsky-Waksberg method, disproportionate stratified sampling (DSS), and list-assisted sampling.

We show the formulas for estimating population means and variances using data collected in a simple RDD design and the Mitofsky-Waksberg method. We provide SAS code for generating RDD sample and a method for estimating the mean number of expected calls based on the negative hypergeometric distribution. In addition, we present SUDAAN code for analyzing a complex survey in a public health setting.

Finally, we give suggestions and recommendations for the future of telephone surveys.
