This study explores how Korean American families deal with nursing home issues. When Korean-American families face the decision to replace their old parents in a nursing home, additional factors bring difficulty in the decision making. Most Korean American elderly cannot communicate in English. There are very few nursing homes that provide Korean-speaking staff. Also different cultural values play significant role in this situation. Filial piety is the heaviest issue.

520 $a Through in-depth interviews with 24 Korean-Americans including older parents, adult children, pastors, and nursing home staff, this research explores cultural backgrounds as well as immigration history of Korean-Americans. Besides analyzing the factors that bring additional burden and conflicts into Korean American families, this dissertation focuses on the role of Korean American church for these families. What kind of pastoral care have been provided for them? What is the limitation of it? Relating the issue of replacement, theological consideration and pastoral care implications are discussed.
