Thesis (M.A.)--Baylor University, 2004.
From their inception, the Davidians looked for a leader whose authority came from God. Founder Victor Houteff died in 1955 with no provision for a successor elected by humans. Power struggles ensued as various leaders tried to prove their God-given authority. Victor's wife Florence gained power for a short time, but her failed prophecy of the end times led to the dissolution of the Davidians. Another leader, Benjamin Roden, sought power in 1955 and changed the group's name to Branch Davidians. Ben remained in power despite a struggle for control of the church's property until his death in 1978. Following his death, his wife Lois, son George, and a young man named Vernon Howell (David Koresh) began to struggle for power over the sect. Each of these three leaders claimed authority from God until his or her death and the struggle over the property continues to the present time.
