Communication Apprehension (CA) is a communication disorder that affects a large number of people. CA refers to different levels of fear or anxiety individuals experience in relation to real or anticipated communication with other people. Since the early studies on this disorder, most of the research has focused on the impact of CA on college students. This purposive interpretive study investigated the impact of CA on eight African American individuals in the workforce, and what they have done to overcome challenges associated with CA in the workplace. The sample population consisted of three African-American males and five African-American females, who exhibit high CA levels in interpersonal, one-on-one, public speaking, and small group communication.

The main findings of the research indicated that CA has serious repercussions for individuals in the workplace. Due to the fear and anxiety associated with communication, individuals with high CA suffer from extreme emotional and physical symptoms such as, fear of dying, breathing difficulties, nausea, memory loss, and the shakes. The consequence is extreme feelings of negative self-worth and low self-esteem. Because of the symptoms and feelings high CAs perform badly in job interviews, and this decreases the likelihood of being hired. If hired, they prefer to keep to themselves, and subsequently, contribute fewer ideas in the workplace. HCAs appear to perform better when they are in control of their environment, but unfortunately, other destructive disorders, such as alcoholism, may result from the anxiety HCAs experience in an effort to gain that control. Self-awareness is a key to helping CAs to begin the process of coping with their disorder. The findings from this study contribute to a better understanding of the impact of CA on individuals in the workplace.
