Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2004.
The dissertation focuses on Calvin's theology of worship and argues that Calvin's religious and doctrinal rhetoric is also a theological analysis of politics and power. I argue that Calvin's understanding of worship lent support to a particularly liturgical reading of politics and human agency. And this emphasis on the liturgical orientation of human life, in turn, informed an uncompromising resistance to what Calvin considered to be an idolatrous social space. I approach the figure of Calvin neither as an unprincipled political pragmatist nor as an apolitical religious teacher. Rather, I attempt to bring together a close reading of Calvin's theological writing with an eye to the chaotic and violent political situation in which he wrote. My hope is to spark further interest in the political significance of worship in the early modern period.

Calvin paid a great deal of attention to the way human persons are situated within a matrix of symbolically laden social rituals. And he had an insightful eye for the way such rituals can distort and deform both local communities and larger societies. Unlike the practitioners of "enlightenment" religion a century later, Calvin did not characterize religious identity as primarily private and interior. Religion is about a basic human orientation to the glory of God, and as such, it is both bodily and public. Calvin presses us to think about worship and politics together, to enrich our cultural discernment by insisting on questions of power, and to reflect on how social rituals situate and identify human persons who act with their bodies in public.
