"Apocalyptic Transmissions" explores the significance of nineteenth and early twentieth century New Testament research in relation to current attempts to rethink the nature of modernity and its secular rationalities. The dissertation considers the work of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger in relation to their generally unnoticed and sometimes astonishing representations of early Christianity, as well as their statements about the nature and function of biblical criticism in the construction of modern secularity. Attention to this aspect of these philosophical writings reveals striking examples of their familiarity with New Testament research and their frequent appropriation of early Christian images for what might otherwise be considered secular self-presentations.

"Apocalyptic Transmissions" also shows the importance of these philosophical discussions for some of the most influential modern historical interpretations of the New Testament by D. F. Strauss, Adolf Deissmann, and Albert Schweitzer. In each case, surprising interdisciplinary borrowings become apparent, suggesting previously unrecognized levels of modern intellectual and cultural engagement within these authors' historical representations of early Christianity. The study explores the implications of these borrowings (in which modern anxieties about self-definition often play themselves out on the stage of an early Christian tableau), particularly as these relate to more recent discussions of modernity and religion in the work of Jacques Derrida, Hent de Vries, and Slavoj Zizek.
