Thesis (D.M.A.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1997.
The pieces in the piano suite Escenas Romanticas by Enrique Granados (1867-1916) were written circa 1903. However, the suite was not published until 1930--fourteen years after Granados's death. Like the rest of Granados's piano compositions, the Escenas Romanticas is no exception to the problems encountered in his published music. These problems basically resulted from the following: Granados's custom of sometimes releasing his compositions to publishers before arriving at a definitive version; his practice of notating the basic outline of a composition but later developing more fully-realized versions of the same work; his seemingly careless attitude toward details in his music; and the rather unprofessional role his publishers played in editing his compositions during and after his life. Because of these factors, the currently printed editions of Granados's piano music contain many wrong notes, printing errors, and are, at times, short of his true intentions.

This treatise presents the first revised edition of the Escenas Romanticas and is based on the performance tradition Granados conveyed to his teaching assistant, copyist, and secretary Frank Marshall. The edition incorporates those changes Marshall made on the scores of his students Mercedes Roldos, Maria Teresa Monteys, and Alicia de Larrocha and which, up to this date, do not appear in any of the published editions. The research for and narrative of this treatise also draws from the interviews the researcher had with Alicia de Larrocha, Maria Teresa Monteys, and Granados's grandson Toni Carreras i Granados, together with the Master classes the author had with Maria Teresa Monteys at the Marshall Academy in Barcelona, Spain. Finally, this study includes a biographical sketch of Enrique Granados and relevant background information about his piano music and the Escenas Romanticas.
