520 $a Discussions and musical examples illustrate how Schumann, Chopin, and Liszt affected Grandos; early piano works and the suite Goyescas. Also, specific instances of the various traits of Spanish folk music found in the Goyescas are presented after considering the significant influence of Felipe Pedrell on Granados and his colleagues. Granados' fascination with Goya is placed in a political and historical context which shows that Granados was not alone in his admiration for the great painter. This is followed by a thorough study of the structure of each movement of the Goyescas and a consideration of the possible thematic unity of the suite. A brief summary of the opera Goyescas concludes the body of this paper.
520 $a To ensure the validity of this study, the following manuscripts by Granados were reviewed: his notebook Apuntes y temas para mis obras, the facsimile edition of the autograph manuscripts of Book I of the Goyescas, El Pelele, the Intermezzo from the opera Goyescas, and the piano-vocal score the opera. In addition to the piano suite Goyescas, the following published works by Granados were studied: Danzas Espanolas, Cuentos de la Juventud, Allegro de Concierto, Escenas Romanticas, Tonadillas, and the first edition of the opera Goyescas.
